Champeaux and its surroundings
The farm is part of an estate covering 60 hectares on the edge of extensive woodland. Officially, we are within the commune of Ronnet but as this is
a tiny village reached by winding country lanes, we tend to refer to Marcillat-en-Combraille. Marcillat-en-Combraille is 3km from us and there you
will find a butcher's shop, two bakeries, a little supermarket and of course a café and a small restaurant. There is a weekly market where one can
buy a range of goodies: delicious cheeses, sausage, honey, fresh vegetables etc. The nearest town is Montluçon, 25km away. On 2008 a stage on the
Tour de France passed through it. The town centre, the old mediaeval city, is very attractive. One can wander amongst cafes, shops and restaurants a
nd a number of historic buildings and monuments which form part of the town's heritage. Clermont-Ferrand is about 80km away. It's a town which
marries the ancient and the modern, with some very fine monuments and a large town centre full of narrow lanes and little restaurants. We recommend
you visit these two towns.
The Auvergne
The Auvergne is green and rural region, where animals graze lush pastures. Mass tourism is as yet unknown and nature reigns supreme. Consequently,
one can observe a wide range of birdlife: nature lovers and amateur ornithologists are in for a treat. The Auvergne offers a combination of relaxation
and leisure activities: cycling, walking, horse-riding, survival skills.....all kinds of countryside activities are possible. In addition, there are
two golf courses nearby, including one at Neris-les-Bains about 20km away. Should you fancy a cooling dip, you can take a trip to the bathing lake
at Lapeyrouse which has a children's play park and a refreshment stand. It's only about 15 minutes away. Canoeing is also available in the Sioule
gorge.
A little more than an hour's drive away is the third largest skiing area in France, which includes Le Mont-Dore, la Bourboule and Super-Besse.
In winter as in summer, you can't be bored at our place! And of course, there are attractive villages to discover such as Charroux and Neris-le-Bains
as well as the local produce and flea markets. You can discover the Chaine de Puys around Clermont-Ferrand and visit a number of volcanoes, including
some with lake-filled craters known as "gours". There is an extensive network of footpaths, some of which will provide opportunities to visit
farmhouse cheese dairies. In short, there is something for all tastes!
